Mushuau Innu First Nation, Newfoundland and Labrador

Welcome to the unofficial bio of Mushuau Innu First Nation! Located in beautiful Labrador, Newfoundland and Labrador, our community is steeped in rich cultural heritage and a strong connection to the land.

Mushuau Innu First Nation, also known as Natuashish, is a vibrant and close-knit community that is committed to preserving and promoting our Innu way of life. Our history can be traced back for thousands of years, when our ancestors thrived in harmony with the land, relying on hunting, fishing, and gathering as our main sources of sustenance.

The name Mushuau Innu derives from the Innu language and means “people of the barrenlands.” Our territory covers approximately 10,000 square kilometers, encompassing vast stretches of untouched forests, pristine lakes, and rugged hills. This natural setting has shaped our traditions, spirituality, and strong bonds with the natural world.

In 2003, we relocated from Davis Inlet to our current community of Natuashish in order to access better services and improve the well-being of our members. Since then, we have worked diligently to establish a thriving settlement that meets the needs of our community while honoring our cultural roots.

Our community is governed by a Chief and Council who are dedicated to advancing the interests and well-being of all community members. We place great importance on ensuring equitable access to education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic opportunities.

Preserving our Innu culture and language is of utmost importance to us. Through various initiatives, we strive to pass down traditional knowledge, customs, and practices to younger generations. Our cultural center serves as a hub for cultural activities, arts and crafts workshops, storytelling, and language revitalization programs.

Hunting, fishing, and gathering continue to be an integral part of our way of life, providing nourishment, spiritual connection, and a sense of identity. We take great pride in our ability to sustainably manage our natural resources in accordance with our traditional laws and principles.

As a community, we are also actively seeking economic development opportunities that align with our values and respect for the environment. Through partnerships and initiatives, we aim to create employment opportunities, stimulate local businesses, and empower our community members.
