Welcome to the unofficial bio of Dufresne— a small and vibrant community nestled in the heart of Northern Ontario. Located in the Wapekeka area, Dufresne is a place of natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and a strong sense of community.
Originally known as Wapekeka, the area was home to the Omushkegowuk Cree people for generations. In 1966, the community was relocated and renamed Dufresne, in honor of Father Dominique Dufresne, a prominent Catholic missionary known for his dedication to the wellbeing of the local Indigenous population.
Dufresne is proud to be a community that respects and honors its Indigenous roots. The Omushkegowuk Cree culture is deeply ingrained in our everyday life, and we strive to preserve our traditions and language, passing down the wisdom and knowledge of our ancestors to future generations.
One of the defining features of Dufresne is the breathtaking natural beauty that surrounds us. Our community is situated on the shores of beautiful Lake Wapekeka, which provides us with not only a stunning backdrop but also serves as a valuable resource for fishing, boating, and other recreational activities. The landscape surrounding Dufresne is characterized by lush forests, sparkling lakes, and majestic wildlife, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.
Despite its small size, Dufresne offers a range of amenities and services to meet the needs of its residents. We have a well-equipped health center, a school providing quality education, and a community hall where various events and gatherings take place throughout the year. Our local businesses cater to the daily needs of our community, offering goods and services with a personal touch.
Celebrating our cultural heritage is of great importance to us, and Dufresne hosts various events and festivities that showcase our traditions, such as the annual Powwow where dancers, drummers, and artisans from across the region come together to share their talents and celebrate Indigenous culture.
We are a tight-knit community, where neighbors are more than just acquaintances; they are friends and family. Dufresne’s residents take great pride in supporting each other, organizing community initiatives, and lending a helping hand when it’s needed most. This sense of unity and compassion is what truly sets Dufresne apart.
As you explore our website, we hope you discover the warmth and beauty of Dufresne, and that you are inspired to visit us in person. Whether you are seeking adventure in the great outdoors, a deeper connection with Indigenous culture and history, or simply a friendly and welcoming community, we believe you will find it here in Dufresne.
