Welcome to Chemainus (Stz’uminus First Nation), British Columbia! Nestled on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island, our town is known for its vibrant culture, rich history, and stunning natural beauty.
Originally home to the Stz’uminus First Nation for thousands of years, Chemainus is proud to honor and celebrate the Indigenous heritage that is an integral part of our community. The Stz’uminus people have lived on these lands since time immemorial, maintaining a deep connection with the land, sea, and forest that surround us.
Chemainus had its humble beginnings as a small logging and fishing village in the late 19th century. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that our town underwent a remarkable transformation. Faced with an economic downturn due to the decline of the logging industry, the community embarked on a visionary project to revitalize and reinvent itself.
The Chemainus mural project, inspired by a similar initiative in the small town of Füssen, Germany, brought renowned artists together to create a series of stunning outdoor murals depicting scenes from the town’s history and culture. Today, these magnificent artworks adorn the walls of buildings throughout the town, transforming Chemainus into a renowned outdoor art gallery and attracting visitors from near and far.
Chemainus is also known as the “Little Town That Did,” a nickname earned through the sheer determination and community spirit that fueled its revitalization. Visitors can learn more about our fascinating history at the Chemainus Valley Museum, where exhibits chronicle the area’s indigenous roots, pioneering days, and the mural project that put us on the map.
Beyond our artistic charm, Chemainus boasts a wealth of natural beauty. The town is surrounded by lush forests, sparkling rivers, and breathtaking ocean views. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the nearby Mount Brenton Regional Park, with its numerous hiking trails and picnic spots, or venture to nearby Kin Beach Provincial Park for a day of seaside relaxation.
