The Première Nation Wolastoqiyik (Malécite) Wahsipekuk, commonly referred to as the “Wolastoqiyik,” are part of the larger Wolastoquey Nation that encompasses communities in both Canada and the United States. Our ancestors have resided in the lands along the majestic Wolastoq (Saint John River) and its surrounding areas for thousands of years.
Our name, Wahsipekuk, meaning “Land of the Grass,” reflects our deep connection to the land and the natural resources that have sustained us throughout generations. Our traditional territory spans across both sides of the Quebec and New Brunswick border, encompassing a diverse range of ecosystems, including forests, rivers, and wildlife-rich areas.
The Wolastoqiyik people have a strong cultural identity that is rooted in our language, traditions, and spirituality. We hold deep respect for the teachings of our ancestors and continue to pass down our knowledge and values to younger generations. Our traditional language, Wolastoqey, is an integral part of who we are, and efforts are being made to revitalize and ensure its preservation for future generations.
