The Da’naxda’xw First Nation, also known as the Kwakiutl people, has a long and storied past dating back countless generations. Our people have inhabited this area for thousands of years, thriving as hunter-gatherers and relying on the bountiful resources of the land, rivers, and sea.

The community takes its name from our main village, situated on Harbledown Island, which is an integral part of our ancestral territory along the pristine coast of British Columbia. Da’naxda’xw translates to “A Village Among Many Villages.” Our ancestors were skilled traders and maintained an extensive network, connecting with neighboring Indigenous communities throughout the region.

Da’naxda’xw First Nation embodies a resilient spirit, having overcome numerous challenges throughout history. Our connection to our land was severely impacted by colonization, residential schools, and forced assimilation policies. However, our people have persevered and continue to revitalize our language, culture, and traditions.

Today, Da’naxda’xw First Nation is a thriving community of approximately 350 members. We are deeply committed to preserving and respecting our cultural practices while embracing the opportunities of the modern world. Our administrative offices are located in the nearby town of Port Hardy, serving as the hub for our governance, community programs, and services.

Economically, our community has diversified over the years, embracing sustainable practices, ecotourism, and traditional resource management. Our ancestral lands are home to abundant wildlife, lush forests, and pristine waters. We are proud stewards of these resources and work diligently to protect them for future generations.
