The Ermineskin Tribe, also known as the Ermineskin Cree Nation, is one of four First Nations that make up the Maskwacis Community, along with the Samson Cree Nation, Louis Bull Tribe, and Montana Cree Nation. Our community is situated approximately 100 kilometers south of Edmonton, encompassing an area of 65 square kilometers.
This land has long been home to the Plains Cree people, whose roots can be traced back thousands of years. Traditional teachings and cultural practices have been passed down through generations, defining and shaping the identity of the Ermineskin Tribe.
Like many indigenous communities, the Ermineskin Tribe faced significant challenges throughout history, including the imposition of government policies, forced assimilation, and the loss of traditional land. However, our people have shown great resilience, perseverance, and unity in the face of adversity, enabling us to maintain our cultural heritage and thrive as a community.
Today, the Ermineskin Tribe embraces both traditional values and contemporary aspirations. Our community places great importance on preserving our rich cultural identity, which is evident in the many cultural events and ceremonies that take place throughout the year. Powwows, sweat lodge ceremonies, and other traditional practices continue to play a vital role in connecting our people to their ancestors and strengthening our sense of belonging.
Education is highly valued amongst the Ermineskin Tribe. Our community is home to the Ermineskin Elementary and High Schools, which provide a nurturing environment for students to learn and grow. These educational institutions are aimed at empowering our youth, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing world, while instilling a deep appreciation for their cultural heritage.
As stewards of the land, the Ermineskin Tribe takes great pride in protecting and conserving the environment. Drawing from our deep connection to nature, we strive to promote sustainable practices and live in harmony with our surroundings. Our commitment to ecological preservation is evident in initiatives such as land reclamation, water conservation, and the preservation of traditional hunting and fishing practices.
The Ermineskin Tribe also values economic development and entrepreneurship. We actively seek opportunities for growth and self-sufficiency, forging partnerships with local, provincial, and national stakeholders to create a prosperous future for our community. These efforts have resulted in the establishment of various businesses and partnerships that contribute to the economic well-being of the Ermineskin Tribe and the broader Maskwacis Community.
