The Snuneymuxw people have inhabited the Nanaimo area for thousands of years, with archeological evidence dating back at least 5,000 years. Our traditional territory encompasses the eastern portion of Vancouver Island, including the city of Nanaimo and extending into the Gulf Islands.
The name “Snuneymuxw” means “place of the small water” in the Hul’qumi’num language, reflecting the close connection our people have with the land, the sea, and the breathtaking natural surroundings. Our traditional values and cultural heritage continue to shape our community and guide our actions.
Snuneymuxw First Nation has a population of approximately 1,700 members, many of whom reside on-reserve in the Snuneymuxw village community. Our governance is led by a Chief and Council, who work tirelessly to protect our rights, advance our interests, and ensure the well-being of our people.
