Despite sharing its name with an ancient symbol (which has been used globally for thousands of years but unfortunately co-opted by the Nazis during World War II), Swastika has a unique history and charm of its own that we’re proud to showcase.
Swastika is located in Northern Ontario, approximately 550 kilometers north of Toronto and 45 kilometers south of Kirkland Lake. Our town sits amidst the stunning Canadian Shield, characterized by its majestic forests, serene lakes, and rolling hills. These surroundings provide endless opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to explore and indulge in activities such as hiking, fishing, boating, and wildlife spotting.
The history of Swastika dates back to the early 1900s when gold was discovered in the area. The town’s name was chosen in 1907, before the rise of Nazi Germany, and was meant to symbolize good luck and well-being, reflecting the ancient positive symbolism of the swastika. In fact, the name was selected to pay homage to the Sanskrit word for “well-being” or “auspiciousness.” It is essential to separate the town’s name from the Nazi use of the symbol, as the town predates the association.
Swastika experienced a significant gold rush during the early 20th century, attracting prospectors and miners from all over the world. The wealth generated by the mining industry transformed the town into a bustling community, with various businesses and amenities sprouting up to cater to the miners’ needs.
