Tsartlip, British Columbia

Welcome to the unofficial bio of Tsartlip, BC! Located on the beautiful Saanich Peninsula in southern Vancouver Island, Tsartlip is a vibrant and close-knit community that is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty.

The First Nations people of the W̱SÁNEĆ (Saanich) Nation have called this area home for thousands of years. Tsartlip is one of the four distinct communities that make up the Saanich Nation, along with Tsawout, Tseycum, and Pauquachin. Our community’s name, Tsartlip, translates to “shining water” in the SENĆOŦEN language, a reflection of the pristine waters that surround us.

Tsartlip has a deep connection to the land and the sea. Our ancestors were skilled hunter-gatherers and practitioners of sustainable resource management. Today, we continue to preserve and revitalize our indigenous culture through practices such as traditional fishing, hunting, and gathering, as well as through arts, crafts, and community events.

Our community is proud of the strong relationships we have built with our neighboring non-Indigenous communities. Tsartlip is committed to fostering understanding, cooperation, and respect among our residents and working together to create a harmonious and inclusive community.

Tsartlip is not only rich in cultural heritage but also in natural wonders. Our community is blessed with breathtaking landscapes, including pristine forests, scenic coastlines, and serene farmlands. Visitors and residents alike can enjoy hiking and biking trails, beachcombing, boating, and exploring the abundant wildlife that surrounds us.

We value education and the well-being of our youth. Our community is home to Tsartlip Daycare, Tsartlip Elementary School, and Chief Tom’s Child Care Centre, where our children receive quality education and care in a nurturing and culturally sensitive environment.

Tsartlip also takes pride in promoting economic development and self-sufficiency. We have several successful businesses owned and operated by Tsartlip members, ranging from tourism and hospitality to construction and retail. Through these ventures, we strive to create employment opportunities and support the economic growth of our community.

Community events and celebrations play a crucial role in uniting Tsartlip residents and welcoming guests. Whether it’s the Tsartlip Powwow, the Salmon BBQ, or the Indigenous culture festivities, these events showcase our vibrant heritage and provide opportunities for cultural exchange and mutual appreciation.
